Venice is full of surprises, and on our latest visit, we had the pleasure of revisiting the vibrant island of Burano before stumbling upon a true hidden gem—Venissa, a breathtaking vineyard estate on the nearby island of Mazzorbo.

A Unique Terroir in the Lagoon
Despite the challenges posed by the Venetian lagoon—high humidity, unpredictable conditions, and limited air circulation—Venissa has managed to cultivate thriving vineyards in this remarkable setting. The result? A unique and complex array of wines that go beyond the usual offerings of the region.

Tasting the Essence of Venissa
One of our favourites from the tasting was the Venissa Bianco. This wine perfectly captures the lagoon’s terroir, with a distinct saline character and intriguing layers of flavour. Notes of taffy and a subtle oxidative touch from skin contact make this an unforgettable sip, complemented by hints of orange peel that add depth and complexity. While Venissa doesn’t produce sparkling wines (yet!), we remain hopeful—especially given that Bisol, renowned for their Prosecco, is the core proprietor of the estate. Could we see a sparkling addition in the future? We certainly hope so!

Have You Visited Venissa?
Venissa is more than just a winery—it’s a destination. With its lush vineyards, stunning surroundings, and dedication to showcasing the unique potential of Venetian wines, it’s a must-visit for any wine lover. Have you been to Venissa or have a favourite Venetian wine spot? Let us know!
