A Toast to Krug: A Spectacular Tasting and Cellar Tour

Are you a Krug lover? If so, you’re in for a treat! We recently had the privilege of experiencing an unforgettable tasting and cellar tour at Maison Krug—an occasion made even more special as it coincided with Mike’s 40th birthday.

Our journey through Krug’s exceptional offerings led us to the 167ème and 172ème Éditions of the Grande Cuvée, alongside the 2011 Vintage and the 27ème Rosé. Each bottle told a unique story, but we found ourselves particularly captivated by the 172ème and the 2011 Vintage. The latter, born from a dramatic growing season and an expedited harvest, was rich, complex, and elegant—its refinement and precision on the palate a testament to why champagne remains unparalleled within the sparkling wine world.

Since its founding in 1843, Krug has defied convention by meticulously crafting its signature Grande Cuvée using a vast library of reserve wines, carefully preserved on-site at the Maison. This extensive collection is considered Krug’s most prized asset, allowing the house to maintain its hallmark depth and character across vintages.

During our cellar tour, we deepened our appreciation for Krug’s blending philosophy—a process that is more art than science. Unlike other houses that follow a fixed recipe, Krug’s approach is dynamic, shaped by the nuances of each season. Incredibly, this intricate process is finalized in just one week by Chef de Caves Julie Cavil and her expert tasting team. Each blend incorporates a multitude of base wines—sometimes over 120—enhanced by reserve wines that contribute to the depth and complexity that define Krug.

To top off an already spectacular day, we enjoyed a glass of the 27ème Rosé under the sunniest skies Champagne had seen in months. It was also a joy to reconnect with Olivier Krug after our last visit in 2019.

A heartfelt thank you to the Krug team for making this such a memorable experience—and for giving Mike the most extraordinary 40th birthday celebration!

Santé!
